Abdominal Pain: Is It Just Gas or Something Serious?

While many cases of stomach pain resolve on their own, certain symptoms should never be ignored.

Stomach pain can feel like a puzzle. Is it just something you ate at a local Albuquerque favorite, or is it your body’s way of saying, “Hey, something’s wrong”?

At PRESNow 24/7 Urgent and Emergency Care, we’re here to help you figure it out and get the care you need, close to home.

Minor Stomach Pains

Most of the time, stomach pain is caused by things like gas, indigestion, or even a stomach bug. Since stomach viruses are common in New Mexico, it’s no surprise if you’re feeling a little off.

Tummy Pain Causes

These issues are usually mild, but they can sometimes lead to dehydration, especially for kids and older adults.

If your stomach pain isn’t too bad, there are a few things you can try:

  • Eat simple foods like crackers or bananas.
  • Sip water or electrolyte drinks to stay hydrated.
  • Use a warm compress to ease cramps.
  • Ginger can help with nausea, and peppermint might relieve gas.

Serious Abdomen Pain

If you have severe abdominal pain, it could be coming from any number of organs, including your stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, or pancreas.

To make things more difficult to diagnose, the intensity of the pain doesn’t always match the seriousness of the issue.

To pinpoint the cause, doctors often divide the abdomen into four quadrants:

  1. Upper right: Pain here could indicate issues like gallbladder or problems, or bowel obstructions.
  2. Upper left: Pain in this area might be related to stomach ulcers or spleen issues.
  3. Lower right: Sharp pain here is often associated with appendicitis.
  4. Lower left: Pain here could be linked to conditions like diverticulosis or constipation.
